Fourth Boston Byzantine Music Festival

The fourth Boston Byzantine Music Festival explores paraliturgical music—music and song written on sacred themes and performed outside of the formal liturgy—in Byzantine and post-Byzantine chant, the music of Medieval and Renaissance Europe, the Jewish tradition, and contemporary composition.

Liturgical and Paraliturgical Hymnology in East and West

In this symposium, liturgical scholars and practitioners present papers discussing themes of poetry and song in the medieval and contemporary religious and musical traditions of Judaism and Christianity. Presenters: Richard Barrett (Indiana University), Brian Mayer (Hebrew College), Sarah Jenks (University of Notre Dame), and Nick Giannoukakis (Pittsburgh, PA)

Performers present the medieval, post-medieval, and contemporary liturgical and paraliturgical music of Christianity and Judaism, including works by the ninth-century Byzantine nun Kassia, the Renaissance lutenist Sulpitia Cesis, the German composer of Jewish liturgical music Louis Lewandowski, and the contemporary composers Joseph Ness and Arvo Pärt.

HOLY CROSS ST. ROMANOS THE MELODIST BYZANTINE CHOIR will be joined by soloists Nektarios Antoniou, Spyridon Antonopoulos, Apostolos Combitsis, Nick Giannoukakis, Demetrios Kehagias, Vasileios Lioutas, and Georgios Theodoridis and accompanied by Panagiotis Aivazidis, kanonaki, Beth Bahia Cohen, violin, Stephanos Karavas, oud, Vasilis Kostas, laouto, and George Lernis, percussion.

KOL AREV will be joined by soloist Cantor Elías Rosemberg and violinist Yaeko Miranda Elmaleh, klezmer clarinetist Cantor Becky Khitrik, and accordionist Michael Mclaughlin.
